[Unlike everyone else, Renart is well aware of Monty's preferences when it comes to meat she's hunted down. She isn't leaving a dead boar outside their home for him to skin and butcher on his own, she'll be taking care of that messy business, taking the resulting meat and bones back to their home and saran-wrapping most of it. It's all getting shoved into the fridge and freezer, ready for Monty to cook with when he pleases.]

It could be fun, maybe. Think of all the salacious rumours you could start about me.

[Just a single, simple note in Monty's mailbox.]

Thanks for the push.

I want you to tell me of more than one more man, though I'd be glad to hear the case against him as well.

[Obviously not a solid case, or they wouldn't be here.]

Tell me anything you know of the girl's disposition, of the governness' family life, and of the sister.

Do the skinny dipping one. That could be fun.

Exactly. [If there are any. People around here seem a little prudish.]

And your scent, in case anyone has a nose as good as mine.

[Though song is hardly the ideal medium to get this information, he can look past that in the excitement of finally being able to start slotting the pieces together. It's not as easy as if he had actually been there, and there's a far greater possibility for error when all he has to go on is a second hand witness statement, but he's beginning to see the whole picture.

He closes his eyes, allowing himself to immerse in the scene and pick out the various players around him, labelling them with what he knows. His voice is a murmur, only half attentive now to Monty.]

The man you mentioned, if you please.

[Renart sniffs, but lean in to press her lips against his cheek affectionately before heading towards the living room.]

I'll be good. [And stay out of his hair. Mainly because she'd like dinner.]

never apologise for this beauty

A harsh and bitter strife, perhaps, but that does not mean that it would lead to murder. Especially not the murder of the younger daughter, it would make far more sense to kill the son to ruin the family business.

[Just the police bungling again and reaching for straws.]

I believe I have the picture of the scene, I only wish to know one more thing. Do you know how the young girl was dressed when her body was recovered?

[The snowfall is still a few weeks away, but in one of the day's coming up Monty will find a neatly wrapped bundle tucked on his front porch. Opening it will reveal a few things - a pair of knit mittens, a scarf, and a simple knit hat. They are all made of very soft, pale yarn and are all very simple. The only embellishment is on the scarf - a simple, stylized applique of a sword stitched into one of the corners.

The package is simply labelled with "Monty" written on the paper in Xanthous' typical yellow pen. The attached note reads:]

For the upcomiing wiinter.

[Of course he had mentioned it, careless of Sherlock to forget so quickly. He could blame the odd form that this questioning is taking, but the fault is still his for letting the information slip away.]

Thank you.

[Seems simple enough now that he has all the pieces, he can see it play out in his head.]

It seems fairly evident that the elder sister is to blame. Jealousy for her younger sister's looks and aptitude, the adoration she had from others. The sister was older, nearing the age of courtship, yet homely and unlikely to make a good match. Worry over this likely made her more bitter to her sister, and a row simply grew out of hand. Such an intense passion as jealousy often creates a frenzied attack, and stabbing is a way to mar any physical perfections.

No. She's of the lower class and would have a greater respect for the consequences, possibly having had brushes with the law before. Those of a higher class tend to believe themselves above consequences, sometimes accurately, and therefore it's more likely that a sudden passion would have overcome the better sense of the sister than the governess.

[He shrugs, hands spreading.]

Though the governess was still a much more intelligent guess than that of the three poor fools the police interrogated.

[He doesn't, but now that the case is solved there's nothing left but small talk and he really hates that part of any interaction. So he nods as if he really is a busy man, and not a detective trapped in a town with no crime and too much livestock, and heads for the door.]

Most distracting, thank you. Feel free to send me any further cases that you have trouble with; that is, after all, my job.
