[At some point in the mid-afternoon, Sherlock comes up to the door at a jog with his coat swirling around him and his Heart sitting at full attention on his shoulder. Eyes bright, he bangs loudly on the door.]
[After her enlightening conversation with Sherlock Renart spent some time wandering around, alone with her thoughts, trying to sort everything out in hopes of coming up with an easy, successful solution to this whole issue of more people knowing about Monty's less-than-stellar past. Of course, life is unfair and there's never a perfect solution, so when she finally arrives home she's tired and slightly twitchy and sorely wishing she could just use her mind control and move past it all.
When she enters their home she's immediately got her ears tuned for him.]
[His voice is muffled as he calls to her. Dinner will be a stew, he's decided, something with the vegetables he's found growing wild around the Meadous. He's picked up a cookbook from the library and is determined to actually do something with it. There had been a man on the front cover, so that seemed suitable enough.]
[Unlike everyone else, Renart is well aware of Monty's preferences when it comes to meat she's hunted down. She isn't leaving a dead boar outside their home for him to skin and butcher on his own, she'll be taking care of that messy business, taking the resulting meat and bones back to their home and saran-wrapping most of it. It's all getting shoved into the fridge and freezer, ready for Monty to cook with when he pleases.]
[The snowfall is still a few weeks away, but in one of the day's coming up Monty will find a neatly wrapped bundle tucked on his front porch. Opening it will reveal a few things - a pair of knit mittens, a scarf, and a simple knit hat. They are all made of very soft, pale yarn and are all very simple. The only embellishment is on the scarf - a simple, stylized applique of a sword stitched into one of the corners.
The package is simply labelled with "Monty" written on the paper in Xanthous' typical yellow pen. The attached note reads:]
[What comes back to Xanthous a few days later is a pink, diamond-shaped pillow, a red, heart-shaped pillow, a black, spade-shaped pillow, and a gray, club-shaped pillow. They're clearly hand-sewn and stuffed with feathers. The attached note reads:]
I know not if you've quadrants filled with lovers, but something to share with them, if you do. Happy Christmas.
[So guess who learned how wishes work? Espio’s gonna just leave a gift of a retractable fountain pen and a slightly strange green ink. It’s a bit shinier than he expected, but it is a gift...]
I assume you’re still writing way too much, so here’s my contribution.
[Espio will find a package with four different sets of cake tins left in a brown paper package tied with string along with a note.]
My Dear Friend,
I must say, your initials do look like 'et cetera' with the wrong capitalization. I assume you are still baking a perfectly suitable amount. Here is my contribution for you.
Yours, Monty
P.S., Perhaps I'll see you beneath the mistletoe at Dr. Watson's party. I do look forward to seeing you there.
[Eliza leaves a drawing in Monty's mailbox the night of Christmas Eve. It's a drawing of him with his arms spread out, singing something. There are notes swirling around him, and combined with the notes various drawings of things he's mentioned and people important to him. It's signed with Eliza's name and has "Merry Christmas!" written on it.]
[Monty is rather charmed by this. He's never been very good with drawings, unfortunately, but he does have belief on his side... and a very fine and fancy pen with metallic green ink.]
Eliza's Song
Once the skies were gray, But you made stars and light and snowflakes. You find the joy in everything; Your laughter lets the mind just drift away.
And with you right by our sides, We'll make it through the night. Your spirit bright will lead us home again. So, upon this Christmas Day, May your world be ever-loving and gay.
Once the world was cold, But then you asked the sun to smile again. Your kindness covers more expanse Than one small village here could hope to hold.
And with you right by our sides, We'll make it through the night. Your spirit bright will lead us home again. So, upon this Christmas Day, May your world be ever-loving and gay.
So, allow me please to say, Thanks, Eliza, for your light on Christmas Day.
[A package arrives on Renart and Monty's doorstep. The two presents are sitting atop one another and tied together with string, with Monty's on top. It's a plain box, and inside are two matching teacups and saucers with 'Cyanide' and 'Arsenic' designed on the inside of the cups, respectively. It's a gift that's a bit on-the-nose, but he hopes Monty will appreciate the humor in them too.
Along with the package is a small note addressed to both of them:]
Happy Christmas to both of you. I hope you'll find these to your liking.
[That is extremely on the nose. Monty raises his brow at the teacups, but can't help laughing. He has his Christmas morning with Renart before heading over to Undertaker's house, a package for him in hand, as well. It's nothing fancy, just brown paper and string.
He raps on Undertaker's door. He's dressed in Renart's scarf from Between, but his cheeks are still flushed from the cold whenever the other man opens up. Monty grins at him and holds out his present.]
[Undertaker can't remember exactly which day is Monty's birthday, unfortunately, but he does know it's sometime around the beginning of February. A chocolate cupcake identical to the one the gentleman had received last time appears in his mailbox, inside a plastic container big enough to hold it.
It's also accompanied by a little card that has the same message as the first, though the sentiment could be interpreted differently this time.]
[Bucky doesn't have the most welcoming expressions at the best of time, but when he arrives at Monty's house and hammers on the door, he looks a cross between being about to bite someone and sick to his stomach.
He barely waits for the door to open before he starts talking.]
I have something to tell you and you might wanna step outside to hear it.
[Because he's likely earned a punch and it's better to do that outside rather than break furniture.]
[Monty very nearly shuts the door. The man looks like he's ready to pummel him into the ground. But Montague Navarro is a man, not a mouse! If Bucky intends to string him up for some imagined slight, then he shall face that destiny with a head held high.
He steps outside and closes the door, standing straight and meeting the other man's eye.]
[On this day, Monty will get a small red box with a white ribbon, telltale sign that this was a magic cupcake. Inside is a spicy chocolate cupcake with Fox Ears and a tail sticking in the back, both made of fondant and chocolate. This is supposed to be a good experience after all The note reads:]
To Lord Navarro,
Happy April Fool's Day!
This cupcake was made specially in celebration of a fun day! I hope this cupcake will bring you and Renart closer, experiencing what she experiences. And with that comes special rules, especially with this being your first animal spellcake:
1. Before consuming this cupcake you must be in a comfortable spot, one you're familiar with. Hopefully with Miss Renart around, she'll be your guide.
2. You might experience something called instinct overload, as your new animal instincts and senses will take a few moments to adjust. Since you have a predator animal, you might experience some instincts to hunt prey. Take a moment to ease those thoughts and center yourself. As well as any urges to steal shiny stuff or dig holes. For references, please ask Renart.
3. You will experience no discomfort in your transformation though I suggest accommodating your clothes for the tail. It's no joke.
She's returned to herself, praise our Lord Zephyr. There's no permanent damage apart from her ego, I think. I should be delighted to meet with you and your companion. Only name the time, and I should be over, as you please.
If I may request a moment of your time; I've been working with Eliza on developing her skills with magic, and I believe she's come to a point where a more formal test of her abilities is in order. Seeing as you were the first one to see her illusions for what they were, I think it would be only fitting if you were the one to administer the exam, effectively allowing her to test herself against that previous benchmark.
Typically, tests of this kind involve the examiner being presented with a series of objects, some of which are illusory and others are not, and inspecting them to try to determine which are real. Given that Eliza is a novice and still working with fairly simple images and sensations, this process shouldn't take much longer than fifteen minutes or so, if that.
If this is acceptable to you, please respond with the next convenient time. I'd prefer the test take place in the library, as it's a quiet and well-lit space, but if this would cause any issues other arrangements can be made.
[This is a bit of a surprise, but not an unpleasant one.]
Mr. Wooster,
I'm honored to be invited to administer the exam for your student, and I would be delighted to see Eliza's progress, myself. I should be available any time tomorrow, at your convenience, but I might suggest 10 AM to allow for a proper breakfast. I look forward to seeing both of you!
[Once Alfie gets his bearings after dealing with the initial shock of the unexpected transformation, he escapes out a window and makes a beeline for Renart and Monty's house. He has no doubt that one or both of them is responsible for this - the timing is too much of a coincidence, as is the animal - and so the next time their front door is opened, they'll find a fox sitting right on the other side of it, glaring daggers at them.]
[Monty opens his door and very nearly kicks the fox as he isn't paying a great deal of attention. Luckily, for everyone involved, he only startles.]
Oh!
[Oh! It worked. How delightful. Monty isn't about to tip his hand on being responsible for this, so he puts on a confused expression, making as if to look around.]
Renart...?
[But of course she isn't coming. He turns his gaze back to the fox, raising a brow.]
[ Alfie is okay, now. He's at home, reassuring Emily, which is just fine with Royce. She needs it. So he takes this opportunity to head out of the house.
Royce comes to Monty's place in a cloak, hood up, gloves on. Everything about his body language is tense and angry, as he stands on Monty's front doorstep, waiting for the gentleman to answer. ]
[Monty does so, takes one look at the set of Royce's body and opens the door wider.]
Please come in.
[He gestures for the smaller man to enter. It's humble home, really. The most extravagant thing is the portrait of Monty's mother set up on an easel in one corner of the kitchen-cum-living room-cum-bedroom. His father's guitar sits in a stand beneath it. There's a wooden table with chairs for sitting.]
[Not too long after his foxy adventure ends, Alfie will - of course - swing by Monty's place. He watches the house from afar for a bit, and doesn't approach until he's out. The first thing he'll do is try the front door - he's assuming it'll be locked, but who knows?]
[It is, indeed, locked. The windows are likewise barred. Monty didn't live in a particularly good neighborhood growing up. Precautionary habits die hard.]
[Gift time? It's gift time. Being at a bit of a loss, Espio decides on a card game. Specifically, a starting set for Triple Triad, with a board, 30 cards and instructions on how to play.]
Happy Christmas!
This was a popular game in Balamb Garden. Some people got obsessive and competitive about it, but it's just a bit of fun. I'll play you some time.
[Merry Christmas, Monty! On the 25th a package will be left on his doorstep containing fox cufflinks. The tag attached has a very foxy paw print, and it also reads 'Joyeux Noël, dear. This isn't the only gift I have for you, I'd like to try cooking a meal for you sometime. Whatever you want.']
[They're absolutely adorable and Monty puts them on when he dresses. He delivers a note back after he finds the wish he made to Zephyr has also come through.]
My Darling,
Would you come over tonight? I have a delightful gift to share with you, but it's rather too much to carry.
[The continued threat of punishment, coupled with Espio's firm hand upon him keeps Monty's stirring cock far too interested. He squeezes his eyes shut, continuing to will his body to settle. There's a growing tent in his trousers, though, that he can't properly hide.]
D-do it, then. If you think it will make you feel better! To attack a defenseless man.
Besides, I'm getting the weirdest feeling you kind of like being pushed around.
[He shifts slightly, pressing up against Monty for a moment, this time close enough to feel the pressure of Monty's erection up against his stomach. Looks like he guessed right - it gives him some small thrill, knowing that even when Between was so long ago he can still provoke that kind of reaction.
He flashes Monty a smirk, then steps back, turning his back on him and feigning disinterest by retying his hair. What should he do...? He honestly wants to push Monty more.]
I was done, but now I think I might want to change tactics.
[This is a bit of a weird request, so she's sending it by letter in case Monty rejects the idea. Written rejection is easier than face-to-face rejection, right?]
[This is certainly a message to receive. Monty walks over to Renart's home and raps on the door. When she answers, she'll find him wearing the blue scarf she'd believed up for him in Between and looking bright-eyed with excitement. Monty holds up her letter.]
First and foremost... yes. Second, when and where shall we be seducing the good Mr. Melborn?
[ Monty will find a small, tied bundle in his mailbox: As promised, K has combed through all the photos he's taken in the Meadous in order to locate any that feature Mr. Undertaker. There are shots of his haunted trail including him setting it up, and miscellaneous shots from around the village meant to capture what daily life is like there. Even if Undertaker is only a distant figure in the background rather than the focus, K has included those photos.
There's also a brief note inviting Mr. Navarro to play with him again sometime, and complimenting his abilities. Maybe the encouragement won't go amiss. ]
[Monty wakes up to a new home, one that's been redecorated to look more like his first apartment after moving out of his and Mother's flat in Clapham. The living and dining rooms are particularly notable in their redesign to accommodate more people. The bedroom is regal once more, fit for a lord, and the kitchen is simple, but fully functional.
He half-forgets the date in his delight, but he does eventually check his notes and sees the day. Monty isn't much of a hunter, but Renart helps with that. There's rabbit in the fridge, caught the day before, and he spends the day doing his best to make a nice meal.
At the appointed hour, he hears a knock on his door and goes to open it for the first arrival.]
Please do come in. We'll be taking dinner in the dining room. It would seem fortune smiles upon us for the day. My home's just been redecorated.
[ Royce dresses up nice for this. He's not fancy because Royce doesn't do fancy, but he's got on a nice black dress shirt, sleeves rolled up, and a pair of black slacks. His hair is combed nicely and freshly washed. Look, he just wants to look nice for the two of them, okay? And if he has to be a bit uncomfortable in a dress shirt for that purpose, that's more than okay with him.
When Monty answers the door, Royce gives him a little smile, affectionate. He also glances around the place, because yeah, it's definitely been redecorated. ]
